Byron Benson

Byron David Benson (born February 29, 1832 in Pompey , Onondaga County , † February 8, 1888 in New York City ) was an American entrepreneur and inventor .

Life

Byron D. Benson was an entrepreneur in the oil business in Pennsylvania , United States. In 1879 the Tidewater Pipeline was commissioned by the Tidewater Company, founded in 1878 under the leadership of Benson. This pipeline was the world's first long-haul oil pipeline. Since it threatened the Standard Oil Company's monopoly on oil transportation , John D. Rockefeller did everything possible to eliminate this competition.

Byron D. Benson married Minerva A. Stevens (* 1830; † 1878). Their son was William Sumner Benson (* 1864, † 1942).

In 2009, Benson was honored with a "Historical Marker" from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission .
