The Fatloh shaft cave is a 10 m long cave in the Wuppertal city ​​area, which is designated as a natural monument in accordance with § 22 a LG NRW.

Location and description

The Fatloh shaft cave is located at its southern exposure around 50 m from the eastern tunnel portal of the Fatloh tunnel on the former Düsseldorf-Derendorf-Dortmund Süd railway line , the so-called Nordbahntrasse . The tunnel breaks through limestone cliffs of the Middle Devon . The shaft cave is described as very narrow, inside there are partly different sinter forms , dolomite sand and a fall cone made of large dolomite blocks. This is the only accessible cave in dolomitized mass limestone in the Wuppertal city area. Access to the small cave is locked to prevent unauthorized entry. The cave is used by bats as winter quarters, for which an access hole has been left. The Eintrachtstraße is located above the mountains.

history

The tunnel was built from 1870 to 1874. Today, the Kluterthöhle e. V. (AKKH) the underground cavity. Representatives of the association examined the cave in 2008, before the redesign of the railway line, which was closed in 1999, began in 2009.

  1. At the time of admission (in January 2017) the entrance could not be discovered. Maybe it was covered with leaves.
  2. The entry for the natural monument describes the position of the eastern tunnel portal. On the official base map (ABK) the natural monument (ND) is on the western side of the tunnel.
