In mining , a shaft separator is used to describe components that are installed in shafts to separate the individual sections . By installing shaft separators, a separate and separated area is created for driving , conveying , dewatering and weather management .

Structure and use

Shaft separators are made either from wood or from masonry. The shaft separators made of wood are made by covering the grooves with boards attached to the side. If only two runs are created, the shaft separator is created in such a way that a conveyor run and a travel run are created and the approaching crew is protected from the conveyor vessels. The drive shaft is provided with a flap with which the miners can close the drive shaft when driving. In potash mining, specially sealed shaft separators were used in the shafts as shaft weather separators for guiding the weather in a shaft. The lift shaft was then located in an area that was also separated from the weather. When the weather was strong , driving with the open lights used at that time was only possible if the flap was closed during driving.
