In the Old Testament, Schafan is Joschiah's state scribe .

etymology

The name Schafan ( Hebrew שָׁפָן) means "rock badger / hyrax ". In the Septuagint the name Σαφφαν is Saphan , in the Vulgate Saphan .

biography

In 2 Kings 22.3  EU Azalja is named as the father and Meshullam as the grandfather of sheep fans, according to 2 Kings 22.12  EU his son is Ahikam, another is called Gemarja ( Jer 36.10  EU ), a third Elasa ( Jer 29.3  EU ), a fourth Michaja ( Jer 36,11  EU ). Schafan is King Joschiah's state clerk. He was also a member of the cabinet and held one of the highest government offices. He receives the order from Joschija to take the money that was brought to the temple to the high priest Hilkija to give it to the foremen through the workers at the temple so that they can restore it. Hilkija Schafan hands over the “Book of the Law”, a book that was probably found during the repairs to the temple. Schafan reads it and brings it to Joschija, whereupon he sends it to the prophetess Hulda, who is supposed to confirm the authenticity of the book. Hilkija, Schafan and his son Ahikam belong to this embassy. Hulda's answer is followed by the reforms of Joschiah, through which essential elements of Deuteronomy are implemented.

Descendants of sheep fans

The descendants of Schafan, the Schafanids, held important offices in Judean politics before and at the beginning of the Babylonian exile . Ahikam, Schafan's son is mentioned in Jer 26,24  EU as a supporter of the prophet Jeremias . Gemarja, another son of Schafan, was a close confidante of King Jehoiakim according to Jer 36,10  EU , so that he could have a room in the temple in which Jeremiah's scribe Baruch could publicly read a scroll. Gemarja tried later to prevent Jojakim from burning the scroll. Michaja, the third son of Schafan, recognized the meaning of the words of Baruch in Jer 36.11  EU and instructed the royal court.

Ahikam's son Gedaliah was appointed governor by the Babylonians after the conquest of Judah, but he was murdered a short time later.
