The Schalke listening post was an air and telecommunication reconnaissance system on the Schalke , an approx. 762  m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Harz near Goslar in Lower Saxony .

The summit region of Schalke was used from around 1959 in the Cold War by French air and telecommunications reconnaissance units , including Groupe Electronique 50/450 and Escadron Electronique Sol 33/351 as well as Escadron de Renseignement Air 21/054, DT3 . These units were also stationed on a separate area of the Goslar Air Base and temporarily had an aerial reconnaissance helicopter there. In 1968 the facility was thoroughly modernized and the foundation stone was laid on April 24th, when the 64 m high reinforced concrete tower was erected as the main tower of the listening post . There were also several lattice masts with antennas.

The land was owned by the State of Lower Saxony , which had leased the property to the Federal Republic of Germany for military purposes. This left the property to the French armed forces due to the NATO troop statute . With the end of the East-West conflict , the main purpose of the facility ceased and the French units withdrew in April 1993. The facility was empty until 2002. The district of Goslar issued an order by which the federal government was obliged to remove all structures. The federal government sued unsuccessfully at the Braunschweig Administrative Court and the Lüneburg Higher Administrative Court, which did not allow an appeal against its judgment. The federal complaint to the Federal Administrative Court was also unsuccessful.

The tower was blown up on October 11, 2002 and the entire system was removed by August / September 2003. The federal government gave the property back to the Lower Saxony Forest Administration , which leaves the area to nature.
