A switching tape is a metal coating on tape, which makes a contact in the device through its electrical conductivity and is used for the automatic detection of the tape position. Depending on the structure, the switching tape is glued to the magnetic tape or an adhesive tape with a coated surface, which is attached to the top of the tape and connects the ends to form an endless tape.

use

With the roll tape and Sanyo Micro Pack 35 , the tape ends are provided with switching tape to stop the tape feed through the device. For this purpose, pins for guiding the tape are connected to the circuit of the device. The tape transport can be restarted with an override button in order to bypass a switching tape at the beginning of the tape.

With Bernard Cousino's endless tapes such as the 8-track cassette and the Rowe Customusic , which is based on the Fidelipac , the switching tape is the glue point of the endless tape and is used to switch to the next sound track or the next pair of tracks in stereo recordings.

In the case of magnetic tape for the mass storage devices of the IBM 729 and IBM 7330 series , switching tape marked the starting points of the recording.
