As a shift lug in which is a car mechanic industry the overall apparatus referred to as an interface between man (driver) and gearbox of a motor vehicle functions. The entire apparatus can be connected to the gearbox by screwing or, if the switch block is connected to the gearbox via a linkage, to the body, in order to ensure the necessary stability in all degrees of freedom during gear changes.

Executions

Switch blocks of older motor vehicles usually consist of a large block housing in a solid design. This is where the stable mechanical elements are anchored, which transmit the driver's shifting movement to the transmission via the shift linkage. The shifter blocks of modern motor vehicles are usually very small and can be stored in a space-saving manner because only one electrical contact is actuated with the switching movement and an electrical signal is transmitted to the electronic controller for the transmission control. Control elements of today's vehicles are designed more and more according to the drive-by-wire concept. These switch blocks are screwed to the body. There is also the option of changing gears using cables.
