Schamel Meerrettich GmbH & Co. KG is a delicatessen company from the small town of Baiersdorf in Central Franconia . The company specializes in horseradish products.

history

In 1846 Johann Wilhelm Schamel (1818–1898) married the daughter of a horseradish trader (Bavarian for horseradish trader). In the same year he started the horseradish trade in Baiersdorfer Judengasse.

His son Georg Schamel (1844–1926) expanded the company and delivered the horseradish in wooden barrels across Europe. Around 1900 Baiersdorf became the center of Bavarian horseradish cultivation.

In 1914 Johann Jakob Schamel (1885–1970) succeeded in filling the grated horseradish into glasses for a long time. He registered his company as the “First Bavarian Horseradish Factory”. The products were marketed under the trademark "Tafelperle". Schamel was also mayor of Baiersdorf from 1930–1935 and 1945–1946.

In 1945 Johann Georg Schamel (1920–1994) joined the company. After the Second World War , the demand for horseradish products increased due to the economic miracle and the " feeding wave ". In 1960, a new company building is built at the old location. In 1986 the cream horseradish variant is introduced. In 1989 the cold store moves to the Baiersdorf industrial area .

The brothers Hanns-Thomas and Hartmut take over the company in 1994 and relocate it completely to the Baiersdorf industrial area. A horseradish museum is opened in the former administration building. In 2001 the brothers founded the “Bayerischer Meerrettich” protection association. In 2007, it succeeded in receiving the title Protected Geographical Indication by the EU .

Matthias Schamel has been working in the company since 2013 and has been managing the company with Andreas Schöppl since 2017. An organic line was established in 2019.
