The Scharkenter Mosque ( Kazakh Жаркент мешіті Scharkent meschiti , Russian Жаркентская мечеть Scharkentskaya metschet ) is a well-known building and former mosque in the city of Scharkent in southern Kazakhstan . Today the building is used as a museum.

history

It was built by the Chinese architect Chon Pik between 1887 and 1892, the construction was financed by the local Uyghur businessman Walibai Achun Juldaschew. The structure suffered considerable damage in an earthquake in 1910.

When the Bolsheviks came to power , religious activities were increasingly exposed to state persecution and many places of worship were closed. The Scharkent mosque was closed in 1918. The building was then used for various purposes: the assembly room of the mosque was first used as a military barracks and then as a grain store. The madrasa served, among other things, as a cinema and living space. As a result, the mosque lost its original appearance. In 1948-1949, the Kazakh Department of the Academy of Architecture and Civil Engineering of the USSR carried out extensive research on the structure, as a result of which it was recognized as a historical monument and placed under state protection. Extensive restoration work was carried out between 1967 and 1978, during which the original appearance was restored. On March 24, 1978, an architecture and art museum was opened in the building.

description

The 28 × 54 meter building also has a 19 meter high minaret and an attached Koran school. In 1982 the Kazakh government added the mosque to the list of cultural monuments that are particularly worthy of protection. Since then, extensive renovations have been carried out. The building is strongly based on the architecture of Buddhist pagodas, similar to the mosques of the Hui Chinese . The Scharkenter Mosque is a popular tourist destination today.
