history
Archaeological finds in the region show that Scharkent was once a fortified place on the Silk Road . The history of the present-day city doesn't begin until the end of the 19th century. Alexei Kuropatkin , General of the Russian Army , was tasked with finding a suitable place where the center of a district could be built. So in 1882 the place Dscharkent was founded on the place of some old Uyghur villages. At first it was inhabited almost exclusively by Cossacks who were supposed to secure the eastern borders of the Russian Empire here .
Great importance was attached to the development of the place. A brewery and a tobacco factory were founded as the region had good conditions for growing tobacco . Chinese and Russian goods were available in the shops, and artisans provided travelers with necessary materials. Jarkent has had city rights since 1891. From 1942 to 1991 the city was named Panfilow , after the Russian military of World War II Ivan Panfilow , who died in 1941. After Kazakhstan's independence, the place was renamed Scharkent in 1991.
Culture and sights
The Scharkenter Mosque is known nationwide . This is a mosque made entirely of wood and built towards the end of the 19th century. It is said that its founder, Uyghur businessman Walibai Achun Juldaschew, did not want to have used nails in the construction. The building is strongly based on the architecture of Buddhist pagodas . Another building is the Prophet Elijah Church .
