Sarkand or Sarqant ( Kazakh Сарқан or Сарқант ; Russian Сарканд Sarkand ) is a city in the region Almaty in Kazakhstan . Sarqan has 10,630 inhabitants (as of 2020). It has had city rights since 1968 and is the administrative seat of the Sarqan district of the same name .

The city is located on the northern edge of the Djungarian Alatau , 135 km east of Mulaly station (Мулалы), on the railway line between Semei and Almaty . Sarqan is 185 km northeast of Taldyqorghan on the highway to Semei. The river Sarqan of the same name flows through the city.
