history
Üschtöbe was founded in 1928 in connection with the construction of the Turkestan-Siberian Railway. The place was initially only a small settlement at the train station on the line. As early as 1929 a Soviet special commission was looking for suitable land for growing rice in the Qaratal Valley . After successful attempts, stately farms were then settled here. On December 29, 1937, the settlement became a workers' settlement. On March 9, 1942, an orphanage for children of railway workers whose parents died during the Second World War was opened at the station. During the war thousands of Koreans from all over the Soviet Union were forcibly deported to Üschtöbe and the surrounding areas.
In the 1960s a yurt factory was established in Üschtöbe ; the only one in the entire Soviet Union. On June 20, 1961, the former workers' settlement was given city status by the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR.
