Kapchagay ( Kazakh Қапшағай ; Russian Капшагай , formerly Russian Капчагай Kaptschagay) is a city on the west bank of the kapchagay Reservoir in Kazakh Almaty region . The dam of the Qapschaghai Dam and the outflowing Ili are on the northern edge of the city. The city is located 70 km north of Almaty , the former capital of Kazakhstan.

history

The city was founded on July 3, 1970 and was built together with the dam. It reports directly to the regional government.

population

The population of Qapshaghai was 52,458 at the time of the 2009 census, which was made up as follows:

• 57.6% Kazakhs
• 34.5% Russians
• 2.4% Koreans
• 1.0% Ukrainians
• 4.5% other ethnic groups (including 0.8% Kazakh Germans ).

In 2018 the population was 61,643.

economy

A production facility of the Bavarian company Knauf Gips is located in Qapschaghai . The city also has many large casinos, as it is one of the two cities in Kazakhstan that has officially approved gambling since 2007.

There are several beaches near the city, popular destinations for day trippers from Almaty.

The city festival is celebrated every September 10th of each year.

traffic

The A3 trunk road runs close to the city and starts in the former capital Almaty in the south of the country and leads to Ust-Kamenogorsk in the east.
