Sheikh Abdul-Halim Abu-Salamowitsch Sadulajew ( Chechen Republic. : Садулин Абусаламин кант Абдулхалим , Russian Шейх Абдул-Халим Абусаламович Садулаев * 1967 in Argun , Chechnya , Soviet Union ; † 17th June 2006 ibid) from 2005 until his death leaders of Islamist Groups in the Caucasus Republic of Chechnya.

Life

Sadulayev was born in Argun, Chechnya in 1967 and was little known before he rose to power. He was a field commander of the separatists in the First Chechnya War from 1994 to 1996. In the short peace period between the first and second war , he served as a television preacher and militia commander.

According to Chechen sources, Sadulayev was appointed by Aslan Maskhadov as the leader of the Chechen separatists in the event of his death. He took up his position in March 2005. Shortly after Maskhadov's death in March 2005, Chechen rebels announced that Abdul Halim had taken the place of his predecessor. This process was also confirmed by the leader of the Islamist wing of the rebels, Shamil Basayev .

As the new leader of the separatists, he ended his predecessor's policy of negotiating with Russia. He began to expand the war into the neighboring Caucasian republics. Separatist sources cite the alleged murder of his wife by Russian troops in 2003 as a reason for his anti-Russian stance.

death

On June 17, 2006, Sadulayev was tracked down and killed by Russian special forces in his hometown of Argun. His successor as Chechen separatist leader was Doku Umarov .
