The two sherefe of the Hajji Bairam Mosque in Ankara

The Scherefe or Scheref (from Persian sharafa for "threshold" or "terrace"; Albanian  Sherefja , Turkish Şerefe , Bosnian / Croatian / Serbian  Шерефе / Šerefa ) is the balcony of a minaret from which the muezzin preacher made his call to prayer. In modern times, however, speakers are attached to the scissors.

Often these balconies are decorated, for example with a stalactite vault (muqarnas) on the lower outside. Some minarets can have several scissors on top of each other. For example, the historic Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque) in Istanbul has 16 shepherd's minarets. The architect Sinan distinguished five different types of scissors.

On public holidays, illuminated lettering for the night and evening hours, so-called mahyas , can be stretched between the scissors of two minarets .
