The ships of the type were built in a basic version, one extended by a 40-foot bay and one extended by two 40-foot bays. They have five (extended: six) holds and are equipped with three 40-ton ship cranes. The ships are set up for the transport of dangerous cargo and in the basic version have a maximum container storage capacity of 1879 TEU, in the extended version it is 2097 TEU. With a homogeneous load with 14 ton containers the capacity is 1504 (extended: 1671) TEU. There are 100 (other source: 200) connections for refrigerated containers available. In 1985 the construction price for a ship of the basic type was around 33 million DM.

The ships are powered by two-stroke diesel engines of the type MAN B&W 5L70MC and Sulzer 6RTA62.
