The Virtual Dimension Center (VDC) wV in Fellbach is one of 13 competence and innovation centers in the Stuttgart region and a member of the Stuttgart Region Competence Center Initiative. The main topics of the VDC are virtual reality (VR) and virtual engineering . The Stuttgart region is pursuing the establishment of the competence and innovation centers as an instrument of economic development that follows the guidelines of the cluster theory according to Porter .

tasks

Applications of virtual reality and virtual engineering are dealt with at the VDC, particularly in the automotive, mechanical engineering and construction industries that are important for Baden-Württemberg . The two main tasks of the VDC are cluster management and technology transfer . The VDC carries out activities in training and further education, project acquisition, public relations and event organization, whereby regional economic effects (company settlements, start-ups, preservation of jobs) could be achieved.

Importance of the Virtual Dimension Center

The VDC is the largest economic network for virtual reality in Germany and, alongside the Center of Visualization Gothenburg (Sweden) and Iconoval (with its Holo3 platform) in Strasbourg (France), one of the largest competence centers for virtual reality in Europe. Today the VDC cooperates nationally with VR networks from France, Italy and Sweden and has members from France, Hungary, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. It is listed today by the following organizations:

The VDC's intellectual capital statements were carried out in 2006 by the German Institute for Urban Studies (Difu) and in 2010 by the Harz University of Applied Sciences . As the capital base of the VDC, the Difu identifies its human capital (balanced member structure, decision-making member representatives, motivated and committed members), structural capital (intensive exchange of information, cooperation culture, innovative structures, competence team in the office), relationship capital (permanent integration into the regional, national and European innovation system , Cooperation with other networks and clusters, public relations, systematic customer feedback) and financial capital. Furthermore, the difu determined the uniqueness and supraregional importance of the VDC (page 10: "The VDC is unique in the combination of technological orientation and service offer - example: the demo center - as well as the professional excellence of its members." And page 11: " Through cooperation with other networks and clusters in the Stuttgart region, but also on a national and international level, the VDC office opens up new opportunities for itself and its members. "). The Harz University of Applied Sciences highlighted the membership structure (page XXIX: “The division of members according to areas of activity makes it clear that the VDC has a good mix of universities, research and development facilities, software providers, hardware providers, company-related service providers and other non-profit and public institutions. Only the group of virtual engineering technology users comes a little short ”). The Virtual Dimension Center thus fulfills the tasks of a cluster initiative.

Awards

  • In 2010, the VDC was one of the winners of the regional cluster competition of the state of Baden-Württemberg and was awarded by the Minister of Economics, Ernst Pfister .
  • In 2009, the VDC was recognized by the KompetenznetzeDeutschland initiative as one of the best IT networks in Germany.
  • In 2007 the VDC was an award-winning venue for the Germany - Land of Ideas initiative .
  • In 2007 the VDC won the Best Innovation Award from the Baden-Württemberg initiative : Connected eV (bwcon) .

organization

The VDC was founded in 2002 in the legal form of an economic association (wV) and represents over 130 members and partners (as of December 2010).
