The Bergen Maritime Museum ( Norwegian: "Bergens Sjøfartsmuseum") was built in 1962 and previously designed by the Norwegian architect Per Grieg . It was built in a monumental style with solid stone walls. The exhibition rooms are arranged around an atrium . From there, glass walls let a lot of light into the exhibition rooms.

The exhibition shows the entire history of seafaring from the earliest times to the present day. The exhibition includes many unique items and a large collection of models of famous ships and boats.

The museum was created on the initiative of Haakon Shetelig , who had collected a large part of the objects that are still on display today. As early as 1918, he advocated being able to exhibit them. The Maritime Museum was officially founded in 1921, but did not open until 1927 as part of the Bergen Museum . On April 30, 1962 it was inaugurated in the new, purpose-built premises. The museum is also used as a meeting place.

On July 1, 2011 Tore L. Nilsen took over the position of Museum Director of Atle Thowson.

On June 7th, 2013, a large exhibition called "En Reise mellom to verdener" (A journey between two worlds) opened on the 100th anniversary of the start of the Norwegian American line . The exhibition shows the background, how the line was set up and how the operation worked. Pictures, objects and films are shown. This exhibition should remain open until summer 2014.
