Haakon Shetelig (born June 25, 1877 , † July 22, 1955 ) was a Norwegian archaeologist . He worked as a curator at the Bergen Museum from 1901 and was professor at the University of Bergen from 1915 to 1942 .

life and work

Shetelig and his Swedish colleague Gabriel Gustafson led the excavation of the Oseberg ship on the Oslofjord from 1904 to 1905 .

The so-called "Shetelig Axiom" describes the thesis that the Viking Age began with the attack of the Scandinavian Vikings on the English island of Lindisfarne off the coast of Northumberland in 793.

In 1938 he was elected a corresponding member of the British Academy .
