Gabriel Gustafson

Gabriel Adolf Gustafson (born August 8, 1853 in Visby , Gotland , † April 16, 1915 in Kristiania ) was a Swedish archaeologist .

In 1871 he began studying at Uppsala University and, after successfully completing it, carried out a series of excavations and investigations throughout Sweden between 1877 and 1888. From 1889 to 1900 he was a conservator at the University of Bergen in Bergen (Norway) . On September 29, 1900 he became head of the Oldsakssamlingen (antiquity collections) in Oslo and professor at the faculty there. He became known worldwide through his excavation, together with the Norwegian archaeologist Haakon Shetelig , of the Oseberg ship in the years 1904–1905 near Tønsberg on the Oslofjord in Norway.

Gustafson was awarded the Order of Saint Olav (knight 1st class) in 1911 and an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University in 1907 .
