The ship's plane is a special type of plane that can be used to produce either concave or convex shapes. For this purpose, the sole of the plane is either concave or convex. These ship planes were made of wood and used in the machining of ships or barrels.

A special feature is the continuously adjustable metal ship's plane , which can be used to produce straight surfaces as well as concave or convex surfaces. On 6 August 1877, was Henry M. Until 1945, the manufacturer of this adjustable metal ship's plane in Germany was the Gustav Kunz company with headquarters in Fürstenwalde. Then the company moved to Hanover. The company Tresselt & Schlüter in Großbreitenbach in Thuringia continued the production of the Kunz planes from 1992.
