Schilbe is a genus of fish from the African glass catfish family (Schilbeidae)foundin Africa . Schilbe species occur in tropical West and Central Africa south of the Sahara and in the Nile .

features

They have a streamlined, scaly body that is strongly flattened on the sides and reach body lengths of 9 to 60 cm. The dorsal fin, which sits far forward, is short but high and in most cases tapers to a point. It is supported by 5 to 6 divided rays . An adipose fin may be present or absent. The anal fin is very long and extends almost to the deeply forked caudal fin. The dorsal and pectoral fins each have a strong, ossified spine. The pectoral fin spine is stronger and weakly serrated on the inside (P 1/5). There are four pairs of relatively short barbels around the mouth . The inner mandibular barbels can also be absent or rudimentary. The premaxillary is dentate. The palatal teeth form a narrow, uninterrupted band.
