The company was founded in 1874. As early as 1885, Benno Schilde Maschinenfabrik und Apparatebauanstalt had 20 employees. In 1900, now with 70 employees, the transition from manual to industrial production took place. Sheet steel fans , air heaters and ventilation and heating systems were manufactured. With the construction of large office buildings and production halls in 1908 and 1913, the company achieved a workforce of 250 and an annual turnover of 2 million marks - German Reich currency , a good half of which resulted from export business. The production of dryers for various branches of industry began.

Shortly before the death of the founder Benno Schilde in 1911, the company was converted into a GmbH. Three years later the construction of auxiliary machines for the dehydrated vegetable industry began. The number of employees grew to 600. In 1922 the company structure was changed again; the company now traded as Benno Schilde Maschinenbau-Aktiengesellschaft . In 1922 the Imperial machine works in Meissen, the Imperial Förster Works in Magdeburg and the grounds and facilities of the Reichsflugzeugwerke Schwerin-Görries were taken over.

In 1938 the company achieved sales of 11 million Reichsmarks, had 1200 employees and a share capital of 2.8 million Reichsmarks. The majority shareholder is Fritz Rechberg , while Ernst Hagmeier holds the qualified minority. During the war the production facilities remained undamaged, so that in 1951 the pre-war sales could be achieved with the same level of employment.

Four years before the takeover by Degussa in 1964, the stock corporation had a turnover of 51 million DM with share capital of 7 million DM and 1,600 employees. The name of the company changed again, from now on the company name was Schilde, Aktiengesellschaft, Bad Hersfeld .

A year later, three lightweight construction and one heavy assembly hall were put into operation. The series production of ventilation equipment took place in a special factory.

In 1968 Schilde AG bought Tromag, Trockenapparate- und Maschinenbau GmbH, Bebra. In 1932 this company was founded by engineers; In 1957 it owned an office building and three large production halls, which were equipped with the most modern machines, and had 350 employees. The number of employees grew to 1850.

In 1970 there was a merger agreement with the Büttner-Werke to form Büttner-Schilde-Haas AG, Krefeld-Uerdingen, known as Babcock-BSH from 1977 . The entire production program was continued at the Bad Hersfeld location. In 2002 Grenzebach Maschinenbau took over the company and incorporated it as Grenzebach BSH into the Grenzebach Group. From 2007 Grenzebach gradually gave up the former location of Schilde AG in the inner city of Hersfeld. In 2009 the move to a business park in the Hohe Luft district was completed. The old site was redesigned as Schilde Park , and the listed factory halls are used as an event hall.
