Werner Hansche

Werner Hansche (born May 7, 1928 in Mannheim ; † April 6, 2010 ) was a German painter.

life and work

Werner Hansche was a very versatile German artist who only found painting at the age of 40. The only child was born to a farmer's daughter and a shipbuilder. He dropped out of school early with the desire to become a dancer. Heart damage prevented further plans.

Very little is known about the war years. Studying sculpture, begun at the Mannheim Academy of Fine Arts in 1946, broke off after only one year. The search for an artistic identity led over the boards that mean the world until the early 1960s: Hansche worked as a pantomime, actor and cabaret artist. Since he also developed a passion for collecting beautiful old things, he decided in 1963 to sell his treasures in an antique shop that was opened especially for this purpose. In this shop he met his future wife Heide Bernhöft.

Through textile painting, Hansche found his way back to the fine arts in 1968. At first he painted in small formats, almost naively. Small people with rounded faces illustrated ancient Greek myths. Stays in Nepal and Sri Lanka brought a greater wealth of detail in the pictures. The colors grew stronger. The canvases soon broke the one-meter mark.

Back in Germany, the Hansche couple settled on a farm in the Westerwald in 1975 . In the late 1980s, Hansche opened up to Russian Suprematism and Kandinsky's abstract expressionism.

In 1991 the artist gave several artistic statements on the approaching Iraq war. These works represent a radical break in Werner Hanse's oeuvre: he had completely ignored the wars in Vietnam , Cambodia and Afghanistan in the artistic field. The sign language of artists like AR Penck and James Rizzi began to fascinate him and found its expression in his work.

In 2000 the Hansche couple moved to Düsseldorf . In 2005 a large retrospective of the works on canvas and paper appeared on the Internet. From this point on, the Hansches concentrated on marketing. Hansche died on April 6, 2010.
