Shield maker (profession)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Schildmacher is the historical name for people who made defense shields and so-called "splendid shields" as coats of arms and then marked them in color and form. The occupation of "Schilderer, Schildner, Schilter or Schildermaler " developed out of this activity . They produce information, warning and other graphic signs and in the city of Magdeburg, for example, had already formed their first guild in 1197 .

The professions that emerged from sign making, such as lettering , decoration and facade painter , formed the forerunners of the modern crafts of sign and illuminated advertising manufacturers as well as painters and varnishers .

The shield was originally a protective weapon, on which status, rank and family symbols ( heraldry , coat of arms ) were often attached.

Sign painter painted - with a heyday in Vienna around 1920 - billboards, business portals, house walls, vehicles and other advertising surfaces.

The Viennese graphic artist Tom Koch collects photos of advertising paintings and has published on the subject.

Today (2018) at least three sign painters work in Berlin.
