The Basilica of St. Egidius ( Bazilika sv. Egidia in Slovak ) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Bardejov , Slovakia and belongs to the Archdiocese of Košice . The Gothic basilica is dedicated to St. Aegidius and has the title of a minor basilica . The three-aisled , Gothic basilica forms the northern end of the central town hall square of Bardejov and, as part of the old town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

History and architecture

The medieval church was built in place of a previous church, which probably belonged to a Cistercian monastery that had been founded around 1206 by monks from the Polish monastery Koprzywnica . The city continued to be shaped by citizens of the German Ostsiedlung from 1241 at the latest . With the economic boom, a new church was built from the 14th century, which was completed in 1415. From 1420 to 1427 the church tower was added. Expansion and renovation began as early as 1448. First a large choir was built, which received its vault in 1464 and the Gothic high altar in 1466. The three chapels around the southern main portal were built between 1482 and 1486: consecrated to St. Elisabeth, St. Andrew and the Virgin Mary. The west facade of the church is reinforced by pillars and contains Gothic arches and a large rose window with stone tracery . The completion of the church took place with the vaulting of the main nave with 24 meters in the years 1513 to 1518.

The church was badly damaged several times by fires and collapses. The imposing tower in the southwest corner of the church collapsed in 1725 and the fire in 1784 and the 19th century until the end neuromanisch rebuilt. This happened in parallel to extensive restorations of the church under the architects Imre Steindl and Frederick Schmulek from 1878 to 1899. Intermediate Renaissance conversions by Italian masters of the 16th century and Baroque designs of the 19th century in the interior of the church were withdrawn. The church was declared a national cultural monument on April 24, 1970 . In 2001 Pope John Paul II elevated the Aegidius Church to a minor basilica .

Furnishing

There are many valuable details and works of art in the architecture, which is simple and strict in form. Of the eleven late Gothic winged altars from the period 1460 to 1520, the most valuable is the Birth of the Lord side altar , which is attributed to the circle of Veit Stoss' workshop in Cracow . The calvary group comes from Paul von Leutschau .
