Shimon Shamir

Shimon Shamir ( Hebrew שמעון שמיר  ; * 1933 in Satu Mare , Romania ) is a historian and former Israeli diplomat .

In 1940 Shamir emigrated with his family to the British Mandate of Palestine . He studied at the Hebrew University and later at Princeton University . From 1966 to 1972 he was director of the Shiloah Institute .

In 1988 he became the Israeli ambassador to Egypt . Just two years later, however, because of differences of opinion with the new government of Yitzchak Shamir , he resigned from this post. He now returned to teaching at Tel Aviv University . In 1995 Shamir became the first Israeli ambassador to Jordan and held this office until 1997, after which he returned to Tel Aviv University.
