features

butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 25 to 31 millimeters. There is no difference in color between the sexes. The basic color of the upper side of the forewing is divided into four. The basal and post- disk regions are dark brown, the disk region is light gray-brown and the submarginal region is dark gray-brown. Ring and kidney defects are not recognizable. The inner transverse line is colored white and encloses the basal region in a semicircle. The outer transverse line, which is also white, separates the disk from the post-disk region and runs in an arc near the inner edge . The wavy line is colored whitish and shows a straight course. The upper side of the hind wing is unmarked gray-brown.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are olive green to yellowish green in color. The back line is dark green. There are dark brown oblique spots on each body segment that run towards the end of the body. In the yellowish lateral stripe there are white, black-edged stigmas .

Similar species

  • The moths of Schinia arcigera differ in the almost straight course of the outer transverse line and the lack of a wavy line on the upper side of the forewing as well as the yellowish color of the basal region on the upper side of the rear wing.
  • The moths of Schinia thoreaui differ in the acute-angled course of the inner transverse line and the generally weak development of the white transverse lines on the upper side of the forewing .
  • The moths of Schinia sexplagiata differ in their overall appearance , which is generally lighter in color, in particular the outer transverse line on the upper side of the forewing , which is strongly curved towards the edge.
  • The moths of the meal borer ( Pyralis farinalis ) are usually smaller, have narrower forewings and a wider, light-brown discal region on the upper side of the forewing compared to Schinia rivulosa . A wavy line is missing.

Distribution and occurrence

Schinia rivulosa occurs in southeast Canada and in the east and central United States , in the south to Florida . The species mainly lives in barren fields on which the host plant grows.

Way of life

The moths are nocturnal. They fly in one generation between July and October. Their main flight time includes the months of August and September. At night they visit artificial light sources . The caterpillars live on grape herbs ( Ambrosia ), primarily on ragweed ( Ambrosia artemisiifolia ).
