The Battle of Talikota (also: Battle of Rakshasi-Tangadi ) was a decisive battle in 1565 between an alliance of the Islamic Deccan sultanates and the Hindu kingdom of Vijayanagar . It took place near the villages of Rakshasi and Tangadi on the banks of the Krishna River in the north of what is now the Indian state of Karnataka . Mostly, however, the battle is referred to as the "Battle of Talikota" after the town of Talikota , about 50 kilometers to the north, from which the troops of the Dekkan sultanates went into battle.

On January 26, 1565, the Kingdom of Vijayanagar lost the battle against the Deccan sultanates . The kingdom could no longer recover from the consequences of this battle and lost its power in southern India to the increasingly independent Nayak dynasties .
