Talikota ( Kannada : ತಾಳೀಕೋಟೆ Tāḷikōṭe [ ˈt̪aːɭikoːʈe ]; also Talikot , Talikote or Talikoti ) is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka with 31,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

Talikota is located in northern Karnataka around 80 kilometers southeast of the city of Bijapur on the banks of the Doni River . The city belongs to the Taluk (sub-district) Muddebihal of the Bijapur district .

The place is known because of the battle of Talikota , in which the united Dekkan sultanates defeated the Vijayanagar empire in 1565 . The battle took place on the banks of the Krishna River about 50 kilometers further south, but was named after Talikota because the troops of the Deccan sultanates marched into battle from here.
