Battle of Ackia

The Battle of Ackia (A'ki: a) took place on May 26, 1736 near what is now Tupelo , Mississippi . She was part of the struggle for control of the Mississippi River . The French wanted to use the river to connect their colony Louisiana with the northern part of New France , but Indian tribes like the Chikasha and the Natchez questioned the French control of the river valley.

Ackia, a Chikasha -Dorf was supported by a force of French and Chahta Indians under the command of the governor of Louisiana , Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne , attacked. The Chikasha , allied with the British , successfully repelled the attack.

The Ackia battlefield was declared a national monument in 1938 . In 1961 it was integrated into the Natchez Trace Parkway and is now called "Chickasaw Village."
