The Battle of Paneion ( Greek Πάνειον , also Πανειάς Pane (i) as ) was a conflict between the Seleucids under Antiochus III. Megas and the Ptolemies under Skopas .
The battle at Xenon of Rhodes, a general of the Seleucid army, is mentioned for the first time. The Xenon report found its way into the histories of Polybius . His description, albeit imprecise, shows that the Seleucids were able to defeat the Egyptians primarily with their cataphracts . These armored horsemen first destroyed the Egyptian cavalry and then attacked the Ptolemy infantry in their rear, which then fled.
The victory of the Seleucids marks a turning point in the fifth Syrian war . After the defeat of the Ptolemies, the Seleucids were able to permanently claim the Levant for themselves.
