On September 28, 365 Procopius had himself proclaimed emperor in Constantinople . The following year there was an open battle with the rightful Augustus Valens. The usurper's troops, led by the army masters Gomoarius and Agilo , including the Goths who were called to help , met the emperor's army near Thyatira in Lydia . Procopius initially seemed to have the upper hand, but was then abandoned by his generals, so that Valens emerged victorious from the battle. At Nakoleia in Phrygia , Procopius was finally defeated on May 27th and executed the next day.
