A sleep mask

A sleep mask (also sleep mask or night mask ) is a mask that serves to shield the eyes from light sources and can thus contribute to better sleep hygiene . They are therefore used for people who are disturbed by incidence of light during sleep; But they are also widespread among travelers on the train or plane, due to the jet lag problem, and some are offered free of charge.

Sleep masks are usually made of opaque material, but also of neoprene , generously cover the eye area and are attached with an elastic band behind the head or ears. The inner fabric is mostly black, the outer shape varied. Some of them are offered with cooling pads.

In ophthalmology , in addition to other symptomatic treatments, sleeping masks are recommended as a therapeutic measure for light compression in the case of morning lid edema .

In the performing arts, sleeping masks are also occasionally used in art, for example in audio theater or so-called sleep concerts. In Dialogue in the Dark - to immerse yourself in the world of the blind - with the possibility to eat and drink, however, a closed, completely darkened room is used and cell phones and even the smallest light sources are collected from the visitors.

So-called nasal masks or breathing masks, often colloquially called sleep masks, are used medically to supply oxygen in the treatment of sleep apnea syndrome .

Sleep masks can also be used to playfully, experimentally hide the sight of one or more people. The child's play blind cow , games about perception , orientation, balance and trust , also with an erotic connection, can be performed with dimmed eyes. For example, a sighted person can use words and / or hand guidance to lead a "non-seeing" person over larger obstacles in a forest. Contoured and padded sleeping masks cover the sense of sight better than a strip of cloth tied over the eyes, as this sometimes leaves a small gap free when looking down to the floor. However, this residual view of the ground can encourage anxious people to participate or can be seen as a safety factor.
