Schleikahn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schleikahn is a traditional fishing vessel. It had a flat bottom (without a keel), was open (without a deck) and was 5 to 14 meters long.

Traditionally, these barges were powered by muscle power ( staking , towing , rowing ) or wind power ( sailing ).

The barges that operate on fjords and fjords such as the Schlei that gives it its name were mainly used for fishing. They were built flat and had one to three masts with sprits .

Many of the old barges are now owned by the non-profit Holmer sailing club Schleswig , whose members restore the boats and organize the traditional Twiebakken regatta (rusk regatta) every year.
