Schlesinger, Davis & Co. was a shipyard in Wallsend , a district of Newcastle upon Tyne , United Kingdom . It was founded in 1863 by Charles A. Schlesinger and Frederick B. Davis , both of whom had previously worked at different shipyards in Newcastle. The first ship was built in 1865. Davis bought Schlesinger's shares in the shipyard sometime before 1881 and ran it himself from then on. In 1882 the Cabo Machichaco was built, the explosion of which in 1893 in the port of Santander claimed 590 lives. At the beginning of the 1890s, England's shipbuilding industry fell into a crisis, in the course of which Schlesinger, Davis & Co. filed for bankruptcy in 1893 . A total of 167 ships have been built in the company's 30-year history.
