Destroyer Schleswig-Holstein

The destroyer Schleswig-Holstein was a warship of the Navy of the Federal Republic of Germany that was in service from 1964 to 1994.

She was laid down on August 20, 1959 as a destroyer ZB at the H. C. Stülcken Sohn shipyard in Hamburg and was launched exactly one year later after being christened with the name Schleswig-Holstein . After the final equipment and the shipyard trials, the Schleswig-Holstein was put into service on October 12, 1964 for the German Navy .

She was the second ship of the 101 class (Hamburg class) of the Navy of the Federal Republic of Germany and, together with the sister ships Hamburg , Bavaria and Hessen, formed the 2nd destroyer squadron in Wilhelmshaven .

From 1976 to 1979 the Schleswig-Holstein was modernized, received a more modern armament with missiles of the type Exocet MM 38 and a closed bridge. She was decommissioned on December 15, 1994 in the Naval Arsenal Wilhelmshaven as the last ship of her class and was later canceled in Belgium.

The Schleswig-Holstein was also called "Sophie-X" after the radio call name "SX" of the liner SMS Schleswig-Holstein (1903-1945).

The traditional name Schleswig-Holstein was given the second frigate of class 123 (Brandenburg class) on November 24, 1994 .
