Dieter Franz Braun

Dieter Franz "Blue" Braun (born December 19, 1935 - March 22, 2014 ) was a Vice Admiral in the German Navy .

Service in the German Navy

Braun joined the German Navy in May 1956 as an officer candidate with crew V / 56 . After his officer training, he served in the fleet service squadron and was there from May 1963 to September 1964 as first lieutenant in command of the submarine (formerly known as " torpedo catch boat ") Thetis .

From October 1967 to September 1969 Braun took part in the admiralty staff course at the command academy of the German Armed Forces and was then first officer of the destroyer Schleswig-Holstein until April 1971 . After a subsequent activity as a task force officer with the commander of the naval forces of the North Sea , he became the commander of this destroyer in October 1973.

In January 1976 Braun moved to the fleet command while being promoted to captain at sea . From October 1978 to December 1981 he was head of department and then until March 1983 head of department in the Federal Ministry of Defense . On April 1, 1983, he took over command of the destroyer flotilla while being promoted to flotilla admiral . In April 1985 he became head of the Naval Office . In this capacity he was promoted to Rear Admiral on October 1, 1987 . In April 1988, he became Deputy Chief of Navy and Chief of Staff in the Joint Staff of the Navy .

On May 1, 1990 Braun was promoted to Vice Admiral Commander of the Fleet . He was Deputy Commander Allied Naval Forces North West Europe from April 1993 to March 1996 and retired on March 31, 1996.

Activities after retirement

After retiring, Braun wrote two books under his nickname Blue Braun that looked at service in the German Navy from different angles. His first book Bolzen & Kinken is a collection of anecdotes based on Peter Ernst Eiffes split ends and knots . In spring 2012, his memoirs appeared under the title Memories of the Navy 1956-1996 .
