Horst Geffers

Horst Geffers (born February 15, 1925 in Braunschweig , † December 16, 2015 in Bergisch Gladbach ) was a German naval officer, most recently rear admiral in the German Navy .

Life

After attending Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Braunschweig in 1942, Geffers joined the Navy as a member of the C VI / 42 crew and, after completing on-board training on the battleship Scharnhorst, was used on board minesweepers and submarines during the Second World War . Most recently, he was a lieutenant on the watch since November 1944 on board the submarine U- , which was commissioned on March 17, 1945 and sunk in the Baltic Sea on May 9, 1945 four nautical miles southeast of the Schleimünde lighthouse during the " Operation Rainbow ". 2367.

After the end of the war, after a preliminary internship in the winter semester of 1946/47, Geffers began studying geodesy at the Technical University of Braunschweig , which he later continued at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . During this time he joined the Landsmannschaft Teutonia zu Bonn in 1950 and graduated in July 1950 with a degree in engineering. On May 1, 1951, he began his preparatory service as a government surveying trainee in the Cologne Regional Council . On May 30, 1952, at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, he received his doctorate as a doctoral engineer with a dissertation entitled Investigations into observed deviations from the undisturbed orbital movement in the system of the binary star 70 Ophiuchi .

After the founding of the German Navy, Geffers was taken over as an officer and, after various assignments, such as in 1958 as a lieutenant captain, acted as the commander of the S 1 Jaguar express boat belonging to the class of the same name between October 1961 and March 1962 as an S 3 officer (planning, giving orders and management ongoing Operations) in the staff of the 2nd Schnellbootgeschwader. He then became the Corvette Captain in April 1962 as the successor to Corvette Captain Reinhard Goette, commander of the 1st Schnellbootgeschwader. He held this post until September 1963 and was then replaced by Corvette Captain Reinhard Bucher. Subsequently, between 1963 and 1965 he graduated from the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg . After further assignments, he was appointed captain at sea on October 1, 1968, succeeding frigate captain Carl Hoffmann as commander of the naval command and control system and held this position until July 27, 1971, after which he was succeeded by captain at sea Günter Fromm . He was a graduate of Naval Command College, Naval War College (NWC) of the US Navy in Newport, Rhode Island , from 1971 to 1972 .

Most recently, Geffers succeeded Rear Admiral Otto Ites as Head of the Naval Office as Rear Admiral on October 1, 1977, and remained in this position until he retired on March 31, 1985, whereupon Rear Admiral Dieter Franz Braun became his successor. In 1979 he was awarded the Cross of Merit, 1st Class .

He was later awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit . Geffers was married to Ingeborg Nord, whose father Ferdinand Ernst Nord was the managing director of the Donors' Association for German Science .

On July 13, 1989, Geffers was one of the founding members of the study society of the German Society for Defense Technology (DWT). He was also involved as a member of the Navy Officers Association and in the comradeship of alumni / reservists / survivors.
