Paul Hartwig (Admiral)

Paul Hartwig (born September 14, 1915 in Steins , in Vogtland ; † March 9, 2014 in Altenholz ) was a German officer and Vice Admiral in the German Navy . He last served as the commander of the fleet .

Military career

Hartwig joined the Navy in 1935 as an officer candidate . On April 1, 1938, he was promoted to lieutenant at sea . He initially served on the ironclad Germany . Promoted to lieutenant at sea on October 1, 1939 , Hartwig was transferred to the Ubootwaffe in early 1940 and trained there. From 1940 to 1942 he served as a watch officer on U 125 . In March 1942 he put U 517 into service as a commander and was promoted to lieutenant captain on April 1, 1942 . During the first mission from August to October 1942, his boat sank eight merchant ships and the Canadian corvette Charlottetown (K-244) off the Canadian coast . Shortly after leaving for the second mission, the boat was attacked on November 21, 1942 by aircraft belonging to the British aircraft carrier HMS Victorious and sunk. Hartwig was taken prisoner and stayed there until the end of World War II .

On April 11, 1956, Hartwig joined the German Navy as a corvette captain and served as a consultant (formerly known as "assistant officer") in the Federal Ministry of Defense . From September 1957 to the end of 1959 he was adjutant to the inspector general of the Bundeswehr and was promoted to frigate captain on July 1, 1958 . In January 1960 he became the commandant of the school frigate Hipper . From January 1961 to December 1963 he was head of department (then called "Referent") in the Federal Ministry of Defense, where he was promoted to captain on October 1, 1961 . From 1964 to October 1966 he was a subdivision head in the Ministry of Defense to take command of the 1st destroyer squadron in October 1966 and the 3rd destroyer squadron in March 1967 . On April 1, 1968, he took command of the destroyer flotilla while being promoted to Flotilla Admiral . On October 1, 1970, he was promoted to Deputy Commander of the Fleet and Rear Admiral.

On April 1, 1972 Hartwig was promoted to Vice Admiral and appointed commander of the fleet. From this post he retired on September 30, 1975.
