The lock Oldersum connects the Ems side channel with that of the tides influenced Unterems . The Emden Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible for operation and maintenance .
The lock
The lock was built between 1894 and 1897 in the course of what was then the end section of the Dortmund-Ems Canal . It was built as a one-chamber lock with two masonry heads and sloping, so-called sloped walls. Their usable length is 100 meters. It is 9.80 meters wide and depending on the water level, the permissible diving depth in the lock is 1.55 to 2.00 meters.
In 1988, the almost hundred-year-old lock was drained for structural inspection. As a result of this inspection, the lock was shut down and plans for basic repairs were drawn up.
Landesstraße 2, Petkumer Straße, runs over the inner head of the lock and over a bridge. The lock is also used to drain the Emsmarschen between Oldersum and Emden and then has the function of a sewer .
