Carina Burman
Carina Burman (* 1960 ) is a Swedish writer and literary scholar.
life and work
Carina Burman studied history, comparative literature , English and Scandinavian languages and wrote her doctoral thesis on the 17th century poet Johan Henrik Kellgren . Burman works as a lecturer in literature at Uppsala University .
A supplement to the dissertation is her historical novel Min salig bror Jean Hendrich (My blessed brother Jean Hendrich) , published in 1993 . In it she processed material that she could not use for her scientific work. Your novel has two reporters, Johan Henrik Kellgren's brother and pastor Jonas and his mistress Hedda. Burman notes: "The doubts that exist about the authenticity of this manuscript make a popular edition more advisable" and "flirts [in this way] with the status of the forged historical manuscript".
In her novel Den tionde sånggudinnan (The tenth goddess of song), published in 1996, three women’s fates in Uppsala around 1910 are told. The focus is on the literature lecturer Elisabet Gran, who wants to prove to her professor that new things can still be discovered in still unknown old manuscripts. She goes in search of letters from the Swedish writer Sophia Elisabeth Brenner (1659–1730), who advocated equal rights for women in the intellectual field. At the same time Burman published an edition of Brenner's letters and published a biography of Brenner in 2001.
Burman's third novel (1998) Cromwell's huvud. Antropologisk komedi ( Cromwell's Skull) is a quirky college comedy set in contemporary Cambridge . She also wrote some historical novels .
Together with her husband Lars Burman, she edited a literary edition of Erik Gustaf Geijer's poems . Among other things, she wrote about the life and work of the “Finnish Sappho” Catharina Charlotta Swedenmarck and wrote a biography of the literary critic and essayist Klara Johanson.
She has received numerous prizes and awards and is a member of the Bellman Society, the Kungliga Vetenskapssamhället in Uppsala, the Clare College in Cambridge and a corresponding member of the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland.
Burman lives in Stockholm. She has been married to the literary scholar Lars Burman since 1983. The couple has three children.
