The Rote Mühle , also called Rohmannsmühle , is located on the left side of the Ruhr , at Strom-Km 38.4, about 1.5 kilometers northeast of the Essen district of Heisingen .

history

Baron Bernhard von Vittinghoff called Schell had a grinding mill built in 1685 for the manufacture of gun barrels . In 1752 it was converted into a grain mill . The first tenant was the miller Johannes Rohmann . Opposite the mill (on the right side of the Ruhr) a stone rest house was built in 1752 because "the boatmen were not allowed to drive on the Ruhr at night". In 1774 a baron von Schell had a lock built on his own account for coal shipping on the Ruhr . This had to be renewed several times in the following decades. The lock chamber is still preserved today. Due to the damming of the Baldeneysee , the lock gates were no longer necessary and were removed in 1964. The ferry house and lock were added to the list of monuments of the city of Essen on January 9, 1986 and September 23, 1992, respectively.

Today only the beer garden at the lock keeper's house on the river side is called “Fährhaus Rote Mühle”. The Kaiser-Route cycle path from Aachen to Paderborn leads directly past the facility . The old walls of the Rote Mühle have housed the Kanu Klub Industrie Essen e. V.
