The Schleusenspucker are the work of the Rathenower sculptor Volker Michael Roth (1944–2008). The bronze sculptures of the three men and the dog are at the town lock in Rathenow and spit water into the canal from time to time.

history

The group of figures was created in 2006 by the sculptor Volker Michael Roth on the occasion of the 2006 State Garden Show in Rathenow. The work shows a group of day laborers bridging the waiting time with conversations and spitting competitions. One of the figures actually spits into the Rathenower city canal from time to time. It is connected to a water supply to the mouth of the bronze figure. A time switch mechanism, which is fragile and only rarely works, controls the spitting.

The term Schleusenspucker came about in the vernacular for the day laborers who in the 1920s and 1930s waited at the old city port directly at the Rathenow city lock for barges to dock and thus for an opportunity to earn income. Between working as day laborers, they passed the time with conversation, a sip from a hip flask and spitting competitions from the lock bridge. The sculpture stands on the western edge of the city center of Rathenow in the old city harbor on the banks of the Rathenower city canal.
