Volker Michael Roth (* 1944 in Rathenow ; † September 15, 2008 ibid) was a German sculptor .

Life

Volker Michael Roth grew up in the Brandenburg town of Rathenow an der Havel and completed an apprenticeship as a stone mason and stone sculptor from 1962 to 1964 . From 1964 to 1970 he worked as a stonemason and in various cultural areas. In Dresden , Demitz-Thumitz , Potsdam and Berlin, he continued his education from 1970 to 1975. There has been a stonemason school in Demitz-Thumitz since 1908, where journeymen and masters from all federal states are still trained today. In 1972 he passed his master craftsman examination in stone masonry and stone carving. During this time he also worked as a book and exhibition designer and developed stage designs and designs for sports trophies. He was also the leader of a folk art group. In 1976 he took over the management of a craft business for stonemasonry and sculpture.

First major commissioned work aroused public interest such as B. the themed fountain of the fisherman and his wife and the Pestalozzi monument. Starting in 1982, the first steel works were added to the stone work. In 1988 he started working as a freelancer. Since then he has been a member of the Brandenburg Association of Visual Artists with exhibitions in Berlin and Prague. In 1989/1990 small sculptural stone and steel works by him were shown in the gallery Unter den Linden . Further works by him showed, among others, exhibitions in Basel, Zurich, Ulm and Heidenheim in 1991/1992.

Volker Michael Roth was one of the founding members of the Rathenower Kunstverein and was also the chairman. In the years 1992 to 1996 he devoted himself to sculptural commissioned works, the organization and participation in the Rathenower Sculpture Symposium and the exhibition Sculptures and Objects in Jerichow Monastery . From 1996 he worked as a temporary lecturer at the training center for stone sculptors in Königslutter am Elm and began to realize commissioned works and projects such as the opening of the EIGENE ART gallery in Jerichow Monastery. In 1999 further commissioned work and free work for his own gallery followed, as well as preparatory work for the exhibition Sculptures and Objects II in 2000 in Jerichow Monastery.

In 2007 he was awarded the City of Rathenow's Culture Prize, which goes to “people or institutions who have created something unusual in recent years or who have broken new ground” and to “revitalize the cultural scene in Rathenow, promote new ideas and acknowledge long-term work cultural area ”. In 2008, the church square with the legend fountain in Lübbenau was awarded the Monument of the Month for May by the “Cities with Historic Town Centers ” working group of the State of Brandenburg. Volker Michael Roth died on September 15, 2008.
