Nicolaus Oemler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nicolaus Oemler , also Nikolaus Oemler , Nikolaus Öhmler the Elder , (* 1475 or 1480 in Piskaborn ; † April 8, 1555 in Mansfeld ) was a German entrepreneur and close confidante and brother-in-law of Martin Luther . He is the father of the German reformer Georg Aemilius .

Life

Nicolaus Oemler had a friendship with Martin Luther from an early age, whom he occasionally carried in his arms to school in the city of Mansfeld. The childhood friendship later turned into a relative, since Nicolaus Oemler was his first wife to marry a sister of Luther. After her death, Oemler married Anna Reinicke, daughter of Bergvogt Peter Reinicke and sister of Hans Reinicke , a second marriage. In addition to Georg, they both had sons Nicolaus Öhmler the younger as well as Philipp and Valentin Öhmler (Oemler). When his son Latinized the family name in Aemilius, he, who also spoke Latin, was not happy about it.

Together with Hans Reinicke, he worked several times as a middleman between the Counts of Mansfeld and the Counts of Stolberg, which mainly concerned extensive financial transactions. They also stayed several times at the trade fairs and markets in Leipzig and Naumburg (Saale) . Oemler's son Georg became superintendent of Count Botho zu Stolberg in 1553.
