A wall chaser or slot cutter, also known colloquially in Switzerland as a slotting machine , is a milling tool that is used to cut grooves (sometimes incorrectly referred to as joints ) for pipes and cables in concrete, plastered walls and masonry.

Wall chasers are often found on construction sites , especially in building construction and interior work . In addition to the demolition hammer they are among the greatest tools that sanitary installers or electricians , for example, use for the laying of water and power lines in walls, in their daily work.

Components

A slot cutter consists of several different components. Basically, the following components can be found in all devices available on the market:

Dust extraction: This is usually located on the left side of the device. In a few individual cases it can also be found on the right-hand side. Both a dust bag and a commercially available industrial vacuum cleaner can be connected to it. This sucks in the dirt and dust that accumulates during operation.

Guide wheel : Most models have two or four wheels on the bottom of the case. They are required to guide the router on the wall.

Cutting disc: The inexpensive entry-level devices are almost exclusively equipped with (diamond) cutting discs. However, you only cut the wall in two places. The web between the slots still has to be broken out after working with the router.

Milling wheel: Expensive models do not cut the wall, but mill a finished slot into it. The work is much faster and you don't need any additional tools such as a hammer, demolition hammer or rotary hammer.

functionality

Wall chasers exist in different designs. A simple design are electrically driven wall chasers, which only have a single cutting wheel and thus only produce a slot of limited width.

As a rule, a wall chaser consists of an electric motor that drives a cutting wheel or two (diamond) cutting discs. Wall chasers that only have a single cutting wheel have a very limited range of uses because they can only produce a slot of limited width. Wall chasers with two cutting discs are common and widespread today. These two cutting discs can be continuously adjusted at a distance of between 5–40 mm. The groove depth can also be adjusted up to approx. 65 mm. A base plate, which is often provided with rollers, is used to move the machine on the wall. Most of the machines are completely encapsulated and offer a connection for a suction device, so that the otherwise enormous dust load can be reduced to a minimum.

The milling cutter only cuts two grooves in the wall; the middle bar usually has to be removed later with another tool.

Osh

When working with wall chasers, the regulations of the employers' liability insurance association regarding accident prevention and equipment safety must be observed. Furthermore, the simultaneous use of dust extractors, hearing protection and protective goggles is recommended.
