Altsohl Castle

The Altsohl Castle (Slovak Zvolenský zámok or incorrectly often Zvolenský hrad ) is a medieval castle, which is located on a hill near the city center of Zvolen (German Altsohl ), a city in central Slovakia . The original county seat was the Pustý hrad castle , which was located above the confluence of the Hron and Slatina rivers south of the town on a wooded ridge and was built in the 12th century. Due to its unfavorable access, the administration was moved to the newly built castle, which Ludwig the Great had built as a hunting lodge. The Gothic architecture of the castle, which was built between 1360 and 1362, is based on the appearance of Italian castles of the 14th century, and during the renovation in 1548 in the Renaissance style, the Italian stonemasons took inspiration from models from their homeland. In 1784 the castle was rebuilt again, this time mainly the chapel in the Baroque style. The pinnacle attic, which was destroyed during the baroque renovations, was restored during the renovation work in 1894–1906; after the First World War the building was used as a forest museum. The building was badly damaged during World War II . Only a time-consuming and costly restoration in the period from 1956 to 1969 allowed it to be used again as a museum.

Today the Slovak National Gallery is located in the castle with pictures by, for example, Rubens , Paolo Veronese and William Hogarth, as well as a well-known tea room.
