Bannes Castle

The ban Castle is located in the Dordogne department of the French Périgord near the village of Beaumont .

The area around Schloss Bannes was settled early on; Evidence of this are sarcophagi and coins from the time of Vespasian found around 1840 between the castle and the church . The first castle complex , built on a rocky promontory above the Couze valley , existed at least since the 14th century, when Jean de Seignal was the owner. In 1409 it was besieged by Sort of Ramonet, the commander of the English Castelnau Berbiguières. In 1442, at the end of the Hundred Years War , it was finally razed. Brandelis de Gontaut-Biron bought the property in 1510. This family of scientists and historians dedicated themselves to the reconstruction of the castle, which was finally completed by Armand de Gontaut-Biron , Brandéli's brother and Bishop of Sarlat-la-Canéda .

The current south tower, known as the Heinrich IV tower, has a larger diameter than the original from the Middle Ages . Apart from a few minor repairs, hardly anything has been changed on the structure. A decorated châtelet as the entrance and decorated roof bay windows soften the fortress character. In 1571 Jean II. De Losse bought the castle, which remained in the possession of this family until 1882. Thereafter the property belonged to the Fayolle du Moustier family. In 1960 it was sold again.
