The Bruntál Castle ( Freudenthal Castle ) is located in Bruntál in the Jeseníky Mountains , Czech Republic .

The castle was built on the site of a Gothic castle complex dating back to the 14th century after 1560 by the lords of Würben , a Silesian - Moravian knightly family, in the Renaissance style. Because of their participation in the class uprising of 1618 , this branch of the von Würben family lost its property after the Battle of White Mountain in 1620. The castle was confiscated and handed over to the German Order of Knights , who had it rebuilt in the Baroque style between 1766 and 1769 .

The arcades in the courtyard, the clock tower and some other parts of the building were preserved from the time before the renovation . Further alterations from 1838 to 1840 and at the beginning of the 20th century concerned the interior work and the palace gardens.

26 halls on the first floor are furnished with valuable furniture from the end of the 18th and 19th centuries. The castle gallery with works by Italian, Dutch and German masters from the 16th to 18th centuries as well as the hunting armory and the castle library are noteworthy. On the ground floor, next to the chapel, there are the remains of the former horse stables and the castle's oldest halls, which are now used for castle concerts.

In 1939 the German Order was expropriated by the National Socialists and the castle was confiscated. In 1946 it became the property of what was then Czechoslovakia .
